Ian Watson - violinist of Adelina EnsembleSouth African violinist Ian Watson completed his ‘Bachelor of Music with Honours’ at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2005. In his final year of study, he was appointed Principal 2nd Violin with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ian was subsequently awarded the ‘Royal Schools of Music Postgraduate Scholarship’, and moved to Scotland to obtain his Postgraduate Diploma and Mmus in Performance, at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Ian’s duo with guitarist and composer Marek Pasieczny (2006­ 2013) became laureate of the ‘Nowa Tradycja’ International Competition (Lutoslawski Hall, Warsaw 2008), championing new music. They have since been invited to perform, adjudicate and give masterclasses at festivals in Japan, Poland, Italy, South Africa and within the United Kingdom. Ian has performed the South African premieres of such composers as Hendrik Hofmeyr (Luamerava for solo violin) and Roelef Temmingh (Sonata for violin and piano) after being awarded first prize in South Africa’s ‘ATKVNational Muziq Competition’ in 2003.

After a two year appointment with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Ian was appointed ‘Principal First Violin’ of the Halle Orchestra in 2012. Ian plays on a ‘Thomson and Sons’ violin, 1770.
